ORLOJ

PROJECT SUMMARY

Design an international restaurant for any city in the United States of America, using an existing building envelope.

Research the culture, food, and history of the chosen country to inspire in concept/design.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

By allowing guests to step into a grand, centuries-old Czech Astronomical clock, time stops. The space brings together Czech traditions throughout its history by using the clock layout to highlight timeless materials and extraordinary colors. The combination of the clock and the nods to historical Czech dates, give the guest a unique experience as they journey through the history of Czechia/Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia and enjoy traditional pastries, entrees, and beverages.

Research

First installed in 1410, the Prague Astronomical Clock is the oldest mechanical clock still operating today. The clock and astronomical dial have told time to the kings and commoners, Bohemians and Czechs, and locals and tourists for over 600 years. The Orloj (Czech for “astronomical clock”) had a front-row seat to the most influential times of Czechia’s history.
